    Tony Mendez

    Tony Mendez

is a media entrepreneur from West Warwick behind PODER radio and other businesses for the growing Hispanic community. His EFNE is for “Connecting people to the economy.”

His innovative practice is creating "Balancing bi-directional markets." One market is composed of innovators requireing one message. The other market is conervative requiring a different message. And we must pass messages between the markets so they learn abou tthe other. Our athem: "Be the product you are promoting."

Tony Mendez, one of the twelve children, was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States in 1977. Educated in the Providence School System attending Gilbert Stuart and Central High School and furthering his education at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.

During his first year at URI he started the first Latino show on that station. From there he worked for several local stations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and in 1995 founded, along with Zoilo Garcia and Dilson Mendez, the first full-time Hispanic radio station in Rhode Island WPMZ Poder 1110.

From the inception of Poder 1110, one of the promises made was to be involved in the community by becoming a vital link to the community as a whole, providing information on issues that affected the Hispanics; i.e. census, voting, health issues, housing, family problems, education, immigration, etc. The station has constantly strived to uphold this promise. The Providence Monthly Magazine named him as “One of the ten people you don’t know but soon will” and Providence En Español named him one of the most influential persons during the 2002 election year.

Poder 1110 has been an integral part of his life and through the radio station he has been able to attain both personal gratification and professional growth. Currently the CEO at WPMZ, Tony lives in West Warwick with his wife Yocasta and his two daughters Winnie and Katia.
